10 Ways To Make The Holidays Stress Free For Pets
I heard you are hosting the holidays at your house this year. The problem is that you have two pets and are worried about how this is going to go. This gathering is the first time you are hosting anything at your post, and your stress levels are through the roof. Ease your mind; there are some great tips for you.
Here are some simple ways to put your mind at ease:
Keep people food out of the reach of your pet. You might even want to have them in the crate or another room when eating. You will also want to tell your guests that your pets are not allowed to eat table food, and they need to respect that.
Let your pets eat in peace. Set up an eating area for them (if you don’t already have one), and let them feed on their own time.
Make sure your pet doesn't have any access to treats that are toxic or bad for them. You will want to make sure that all desserts are out of the way for sure.
Don't leave your pet alone in the room where there are dangers: a lit tree, lit candles. Also, keep holiday plants such as mistletoe and lilies out of reach of pets.
Secure your Christmas tree to keep it from falling over if your dog bumps it or your cat climbs it. Hanging lemon-scented car air fresheners in the tree may deter your cat from scaling it.
Provide a safe place for your pet to escape the excitement or overwhelm. A kennel or crate is a great option, ensure that they are comfortable and familiar with it.
Guests might want to bring their pets to holiday gatherings. If they ask, make sure that your pet does well with others. You can either watch them closely or take turns allowing them to be outside of the crate or a room.
If your pet gets nervous or anxious around other people, you should put it in another room or a crate. You could visit this blog post (enter link) that we wrote about how to calm your dog during the holidays and traveling.
Pets can sometimes make people uncomfortable and may be more stressed than normal. Monitor the environment and make sure everyone is safe and calm.
Even if your pets are comfortable around guests, always watch them diligently. When people are entering or leaving your home, you will want to put your pet away or keep an extra keen eye on them.
Always observe the people around you and your pets. If you notice anything unusual or someone not acting like themselves, put them in a safe place such as their crate or a bedroom.
